Dates planned in several city districts as well as a climate cycling tour
Darmstadt is offering several climate-themed walks and a bicycle tour this year. The city of science announced that a total of six walks in different districts, as well as a "climate cycling tour," are on the program.
Appointments in several districts
The climate tours will take place on the following dates:
- April: Paulusviertel
- May: Arheilgen
- May: Kranichstein
- June: Bessungen
- June: City center
- August: Heimstättensiedlung
Additionally, a bicycle tour through Eberstadt will be offered on September 16th.
Urban climate and adaptation in focus
The tours focus on practical questions concerning the urban climate and ways to adapt to climate change in everyday life. Among other things, participants will learn how green spaces contribute to cooling, how unsealed surfaces can protect against flooding, and what role sustainable water use plays.
Interactive on-site measurements
A special feature of the events is the opportunity for participants to conduct their own measurements. Thermal cameras are used to record surface temperatures in order to visualize differences between sealed and vegetated areas.
Experts from the city's Office for Climate Protection and Climate Adaptation will also explain the background to the climate crisis and existing measures such as the urban climate analysis, heavy rainfall hazard maps, and the climate adaptation plan. The "paving over" campaign to remove impervious surfaces will also be presented.
Meeting points and schedule
The first walking tour starts in the Paulusviertel district at the BUND Center for Urban Nature in the Orangerie. The events each last approximately 90 minutes and begin at 5:30 p.m. The bicycle tour starts earlier, at 5:00 p.m.
