Alternative holiday programs offered by supra-regional providers
The major financial challenges currently facing the district town of Groß-Gerau are also affecting the popular municipal holiday activities.
In the summer of 2025, the municipal youth services will be unable to offer the long-standing holiday programs in Dornheim, Wallerstädten, and the town center. For decades, these programs have been significantly subsidized by the city. Due to the current budget situation of the district capital, voluntary services, including the holiday programs, are unfortunately not feasible.
The city administration is aware of the importance of this program for children and parents. The holiday activities were not only a valuable educational initiative, but also a vital support for families during the summer holidays. Therefore, discontinuing them represents a painful loss – both for the families affected and for the city itself.
“This decision was not easy for us,” emphasizes Mayor Jörg Rüddenklau. “We know that the holiday activities are an important support for many families in Groß-Gerau. However, given the current financial situation, there is unfortunately no alternative. It is therefore all the more important to point out existing regional holiday programs that families can use as a substitute.”
Alternative holiday programs for children and young people
The city administration recommends that parents inquire about alternative holiday programs offered by external providers. Various organizations offer pedagogically sound and affordable programs during the summer months. Useful information can be found on the following platforms:
- Holiday platform of Hessian youth associations and youth welfare offices
- Holiday offers from German youth hostels
- Leisure activities and holiday programs of the youth organization of AWO Hessen Süd eV.
- Summer exercise program “Children's Sports Club” of TV 1846 Groß-Gerau (for 6-14 year olds)
- Outdoor recreational activity of the Protestant Youth of Groß-Gerau – Rüsselsheim (for 10-12 year olds)
The district town of Groß-Gerau remains committed to maintaining and promoting family-friendly structures. However, decisions regarding cost-saving measures cannot be made solely by the city administration or the political level, but are subject to budgetary regulations.
