Alternative holiday offers by local supporters
The great financial challenges, in front of which the district town of Groß-Gerau is currently standing, also affect the popular urban holiday games.
In the summer of 2025, municipal youth work will not be possible to offer the traditional holiday programs in Dornheim, Wallerstädten and the core city. For decades, these have been subsidized by significant urban funds. Due to the provisional housekeeping of the district town, voluntary services, including the holiday games, are unfortunately not feasible.
The city administration is aware of the importance of this offer for children and parents. The holiday games were not only a pedagogically valuable measure, but also an important support for families during the summer vacation. The waiver is therefore a painful cut - both for the families concerned and for the city itself.
"This decision was not easy for us," emphasizes Mayor Jörg Rüddenklau. “We know that the holiday games for many families in Groß-Gerau are important support. But in view of the current financial situation, there is unfortunately no alternative. It is all the more important to point out existing local holiday offers that can use families as a replacement. ”
Alternative holiday offers for children and adolescents
The city administration recommends that parents inform themselves about alternative holiday programs of external providers. Various carriers offer educational and affordable measures in the summer months. Useful information can be found on the following platforms:
- Holiday platform of the Hessian youth associations and youth welfare offices
- Holiday offers from the German youth hostels
- Free time and holiday games of the AWO Hessen Süd eV youth work
- Summer movement offer "Children's Sports Club" of TV 1846 Groß-Gerau (for 6–14-year-old)
- Outdoor leisure time of the Evangelical Youth Groß-Gerau-Rüsselsheim (for 10–12 year olds)
The district town of Groß-Gerau continues to strive to preserve and promote family-friendly structures. However, decisions about savings measures must not be made solely by the city administration or the political level, but are subject to budgetary requirements.
