Anniversary celebration on September 11th commemorates five decades of open children's and youth work
For more than half a century, the Go-In youth center has been a vital hub for children and young people in Eberstadt South. On Friday, September 11, 2026, the municipal facility will celebrate its anniversary under the motto "50+1 Years." Starting at 3 p.m., visitors can enjoy a program of music, dance, interactive activities, and a look back at the history of the district at Kirnberger Straße 12. Admission is free.
Go-In was founded in 1975. Its 50th anniversary was actually supposed to have been celebrated last year. However, due to construction work at the House of Diversity, the anniversary celebration had to be postponed and is now being held a year later.
“For over half a century, the Go-In has been an indispensable anchor point, a safe meeting place, and a reliable refuge for children and young people in the Darmstadt-Eberstadt district,” explains Mayor Barbara Akdeniz. Young people find “support, a listening ear, and community” there. This is the result of tireless dedication, which she greatly appreciates.
Support in everyday life and in career choice
The community youth center sees itself as a place where young people can develop freely. For several years, a cooking project has been a key educational focus. The program is complemented by sports activities and creative workshops. The aim is to combine healthy lifestyle practices with active leisure pursuits.
However, the work of Go-In extends beyond this. The educational staff support children and young people in coping with their daily lives, with career orientation, and also in personal crisis situations.
Head of the Youth Welfare Office, Imke Jung-Kroh, points to the particular challenges of the past period. The construction work at the House of Diversity demanded a great deal of patience from the team, but at the same time brought the community around the youth center closer together.
“The youth center team has constantly adapted to the lifestyles of the younger generation and does an enormously important job in the social and cultural integration of young people in the district,” said Jung-Kroh.
Music, dance and memories of five decades
The anniversary celebration on September 11th will therefore not only be a celebration, but also a look back at the past five decades. The program includes music and dance, as well as insights into the history of the district. Interactive activities are especially geared towards children and young people.
Furthermore, the festival is intended to provide an opportunity to talk to each other and share memories of the Go-In's history. Food and drinks will be provided.
