Autumn concert on September 13th at the Marienhöhe community center with the Chamber Philharmonic
The Bach Choir Darmstadt is dedicating its autumn concert this year to Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. On Sunday, September 13, 2026, at 6 p.m., the ensemble will perform the oratorio "Paulus" at the Marienhöhe Community Center. Soloists and the Darmstadt Chamber Philharmonic will join the choir in the performance.
Mendelssohn's oratorio, first performed in 1836, tells the biblical story of the Apostle Paul and his transformation from persecutor of Christians Saul to a preacher of the Christian faith.
Choirs play a central role
Mendelssohn drew inspiration for his work from, among other things, the oratorio tradition of Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel. The choirs play a particularly important role in "Paulus": they appear, among other things, as the crowd and the Christian community, or they comment on the events.
Arias and other solo parts address the inner conflicts and religious beliefs of the characters. The orchestra accompanies the narrative with changing instrumental timbres and dramatic crescendos.
The Bach Choir is conducted by Angela Gehann-Dernbach. The soloists are Ursula Ott (soprano), Christian Rathgeber (tenor), and Peter Schüler (bass). The Darmstadt Chamber Philharmonic performs.

The concert begins on September 13th at 6 pm in the Marienhöhe Community Center, Auf der Marienhöhe 57 in Darmstadt. Doors open at 5 pm; seating is unreserved.
Tickets are available in advance and at the door. Children under 15 years of age have free admission. According to the organizer, discounts are available for school pupils, students, people with disabilities, and their companions.
