Digital maps provide information on urban climate and development plans
The city of Darmstadt, a center of science and research, has launched a new geoportal. Citizens can now access a wealth of geographical information and maps free of charge via this digital platform. This includes data on the city's climate, development plans, and social infrastructure. No registration or additional software is required to use the portal.
With this new service, the city aims to make geographical information more easily accessible. The geoportal is intended not only for private individuals, but also for businesses, research institutions, and government agencies. The provided geodata can be used free of charge and without restriction.
Urban climate, development plans and social infrastructure
The new Darmstadt geoportal brings together various spatial information on a single digital platform. Users can, for example, access maps of the city's climate, find information on development plans, or view data on social infrastructure.
This allows information that was previously often only accessible via different administrative bodies to be retrieved via a common interface.
“The listed geodata form the basis for many decisions in our city – from urban development and climate protection to mobility and social facilities,” explains Digitalization Officer Holger Klötzner.
With the provision of the geoportal, Darmstadt is taking another step towards a digital, transparent and citizen-oriented administration.
Maps can be combined and evaluated
The platform offers various functions for displaying and evaluating the available information.
Individual map layers can be shown or hidden, or combined with each other. Search, filter, and measurement functions are also available.
In this way, users can view different geographical information together and investigate spatial relationships.
For more advanced applications, selected geodata can also be downloaded in common formats for geographic information systems. This allows the data to be used, for example, for scientific studies or professional planning.
City Councillor Paul Georg Wandrey sees this as having a practical benefit for different target groups: "By making this information easily and freely accessible, we create concrete added value for citizens, businesses, science and administration."
The geodata catalog complements the offering
In addition to the actual geoportal, the science city of Darmstadt provides a geodata catalog.
This contains detailed descriptions of the available data, maps, and services. Users can search for specific information and filter the results according to various criteria.
This includes, for example, the timeliness of the data, the respective collection method and the applicable usage rights.
The catalogue is intended in particular to facilitate targeted research and the professional reuse of the information provided.
Use without registration or additional software
Both the geoportal and the geodata catalog are entirely web-based. Neither registration nor the installation of additional programs is required.
The city announces that it will continuously develop both services and provide additional data sets.
The respective departments, administrative offices and municipal enterprises of the City of Darmstadt are responsible for the content.
The technical and organizational support is primarily provided by the Darmstadt Geodata Infrastructure Coordination Office (GDI-DA) within the Surveying Office. They are also available for questions and comments.
