Modern new building strengthens all-day offerings in Darmstadt
The city of Darmstadt, a center of science and research, officially inaugurated the new cafeteria and all-day care building at the Wilhelm-Leuschner-School on April 27, 2026. City Treasurer André Schellenberg and Head of School Affairs Holger Klötzner, along with members of the school community, attended the opening ceremony.
New focal point of the school campus
The two-story new building was developed by the city's real estate management department (IDA) and designed by the Darmstadt-based architectural firm Rittmannsperger. The building includes a modern cafeteria with a kitchen, as well as all-day care facilities including a library, and forms the spatial boundary of the school grounds.
The wooden construction, generous window areas and open room structures create a bright and functional learning and living space.
Focus on sustainability and accessibility
The new building was constructed to be barrier-free and in accordance with passive house standards. Features include a green roof with a photovoltaic system and a sustainable rainwater drainage system that directs rainwater into surrounding green spaces.
The outdoor areas were also redesigned: A terrace in a quiet location in the schoolyard and barrier-free access further enhance the surroundings.
All-day programs have been specifically strengthened
With the new building, the city is expanding its infrastructure for all-day schools. In addition to providing meals, the new spaces are also intended to combine social interaction, childcare, and learning.
School with a long history
The Wilhelm-Leuschner-School is a secondary school (Hauptschule, Realschule, Mittelschule) with all-day programs and an evening Realschule. The school complex, dating from the 1950s, is a listed building and has been gradually modernized in recent years.
