A free seminar on November 10th will provide information on the planning, technology and advantages of green facades
Green facades can protect buildings from summer heat, improve the urban climate, and create new habitats for animals. The possibilities offered by facade greening and what needs to be considered during planning, implementation, and maintenance will be the focus of the "Facade Greening Forum 2026" on Tuesday, November 10, 2026, at the Justus Liebig House in Darmstadt. The City of Darmstadt is hosting this free half-day seminar in cooperation with the German Federal Association for Green Buildings (Bundesverband GebäudeGrün e.V.).
The event begins at 12:30 pm with an official welcome by Environmental Officer Michael Kolmer. Experts from architecture, landscape and urban planning, municipal authorities and construction companies, as well as anyone interested in learning about greening building options, are invited.
From planning to maintenance of green facades
The forum provides fundamental and practical knowledge on the proper installation of green facades. This includes both the planning of new projects and the care and maintenance of existing systems.
The program includes lectures on fire protection, static requirements, loads and structures, as well as current product and system developments.
Furthermore, self-regulating systems and different forms of facade greening are presented. These include ground-based greening, where plants grow up the facade from the ground, and wall-mounted systems, where the plants are supplied directly at the building facade.
Current developments in the market for facade greening are also discussed.
Experiences from Darmstadt and new opportunities
The city's Office for Climate Protection and Climate Adaptation will report on its experiences with green facades in Darmstadt at the forum. Both the opportunities and challenges of such projects will be considered.
Another focus is the question of what contribution facade greening can make to climate adaptation and how it fits into the greening initiative of the science city.
The municipal enterprise for tasks and services of the city of Darmstadt (EAD) also participates in the program and provides knowledge on the topic of biochar.
Green facades help against summer heat
Green facades can have several positive effects. By providing shade, plants protect buildings from intense sunlight and thus reduce the heating of the exterior walls.
Additionally, the evaporation of water creates a cooling effect. This can contribute to improving the microclimate, especially in densely populated urban areas.
Green facades also provide habitats for animals, can bind air pollutants, and reduce noise pollution. Green building surfaces can also have a positive effect on human well-being.
Lincoln settlement and Ludwigshöhe district as examples
Environmental officer Michael Kolmer points out that greening buildings has been part of urban development in Darmstadt for quite some time.
“The topic of greening buildings has been practiced in Darmstadt for some time now, both in planning and in practice, and is an important component of climate-adapted residential areas, as the Lincoln settlement and the Ludwigshöh district impressively demonstrate,” explains Kolmer.
The city hopes the forum will promote professional exchange and at the same time reach people who are interested in greening their own building.
“We hope for a high level of participation in the event from both experts and interested parties who would like to learn about the possibilities of green facades in their own homes,” said the environmental officer.
Participation is free – registration is possible online
The facade greening forum will take place on Tuesday, November 10th, starting at 12:30 pm in the Justus Liebig House at Große Bachgasse 2.
