The city requests consideration for sidewalks and public areas
Passing on well-preserved items instead of throwing them away conserves resources and is sustainable. However, the city administration in Weiterstadt is now pointing out that so-called "free" boxes may not remain permanently on public sidewalks and other traffic areas.
Many residents place books, household items, toys, or other still usable items in front of their houses with a sign saying "Free to a good home." The city generally welcomes this commitment to sustainability and resource conservation.
However, as soon as boxes or objects are placed on a public sidewalk or other public traffic area, the city states that this constitutes a special use of public space within the meaning of the applicable municipal statute.
Sidewalks must remain passable
The city reminds everyone that public sidewalks primarily serve the safe and unrestricted use of all road users. People with mobility impairments, those with visual impairments, and parents with strollers, in particular, rely on sufficiently clear and easily navigable paths.
"Free" boxes may therefore only be placed temporarily in public areas. The boxes and any unclaimed items must be removed after two days at the latest. Unclaimed items may not remain permanently in public spaces.
The city requests that the regulations be observed and that public spaces be used responsibly. This is intended to keep sidewalks safe and the cityscape clean and attractive.
Alternatives for well-preserved items
According to the city, those who wish to offer items for longer periods can use swap meets, charity shops, or other donation opportunities. The yard sales in the Weiterstadt districts are also a good option.
