Mining authorities warn of life-threatening risks in southern Hesse
With the first hot days of the year, many people feel the urge to cool off in the water. However, the Darmstadt Regional Council strongly warns against swimming in quarry lakes that are not officially designated for recreational use.
The mining authority for southern Hesse, located at the regional government office, points out that such bodies of water can pose significant dangers.
Invisible risks beneath the water's surface
Steep slopes and the specific conditions of former or still active mining areas are particularly dangerous. Underwater, sand masses can slide and cause strong currents.
Furthermore, there is a risk of life-threatening cold shock from sudden cold water currents. On land, unsecured embankments can also collapse or break away due to vibrations.
Numerous swimming accidents in lakes and rivers
According to the German Lifesaving Association (DLRG), nearly 400 people drowned in bodies of water across Germany last year. Most of these deaths occurred in lakes and rivers.
In Hesse, a total of 19 drowning deaths were recorded in 2025. There have already been some incidents this year as well.
While officially designated bathing areas often have supervisory staff present who can quickly provide assistance in case of emergency, this safety measure is lacking at unapproved gravel pits.
Legal consequences are also possible
The regional government also points out that entering company premises and climbing on floating work equipment such as excavators or conveyor systems is prohibited.
Anyone using such facilities as a viewing platform or diving tower risks not only significant risk of injury but also being charged with trespassing.
Use official bathing areas
The mountain authorities therefore strongly recommend using only designated and approved bathing areas. Conditions at these sites have been checked and, in many cases, additional safety measures are in place.
