Be considerate, avoid causing damage with pranks, and maintain good visibility in traffic – police appeal to children, teenagers, and adults
When witches, vampires, and other spooky figures roam the streets again on Saturday, October 31, 2026, the focus for many people will be on having fun. To ensure that Halloween night in southern Hesse remains peaceful, the police are offering tips for safe and considerate behavior.
Children and teenagers are especially busy on Halloween, going from house to house collecting candy. However, they should observe a few rules. The police are also appealing to adults and drivers to be particularly vigilant on Halloween night.
Halloween pranks must not be criminal offenses
For many children and teenagers, "trick or treat" is an essential part of Halloween. However, ringing doorbells should only be done where it is welcome. Those who don't answer or don't want to hand out candy should be left alone.
Even with Halloween pranks, there are clear limits. What seems funny to some can cause significant damage to others. Throwing eggs at buildings, defacing walls, or damaging other people's property are not harmless pranks.
Such actions can have legal consequences as property damage. The police therefore emphasize that Halloween pranks must not harm anyone.
Ensure good visibility in road traffic
Since many children and young people are only out and about after nightfall, road safety plays an important role.
Bright costumes or reflective elements help to ensure that you are seen by drivers early on. Masks and disguises should also be chosen so that they do not obstruct your field of vision.
Police recommend that parents talk to younger children beforehand about proper road safety behavior. This includes, in particular, crossing streets only at clearly visible locations and with the necessary attention.
Motorists should be especially careful on Halloween night and expect costumed children or teenagers to cross the road at any time.
Be considerate of your neighbors at Halloween parties
Mutual consideration is also required at private Halloween parties and gatherings with friends.
The police remind people to avoid unnecessary noise and to respect the neighborhood's peace and quiet at night.
Special caution is advised when consuming alcohol. Alcohol impairs perception and judgment. Anyone who has been drinking should therefore absolutely not drive a car.
Police also on duty on Halloween
The South Hesse police will also be on duty on Halloween night. Their aim is to prevent dangers, intervene in conflicts, and ensure the safety of the population.
The police are also counting on the support of the public. Anyone who shows consideration for others, respects property, and is mindful of their fellow citizens will contribute to a peaceful Halloween evening.
In case of imminent danger or crime, the police should be notified. They can be reached in emergencies by calling 110 .
