EAD provides information on snow removal obligations, de-icing agents and free grit
With the onset of the cold season, Darmstadt is preparing for snow and ice. Starting Sunday, November 1, 2026, the municipal services department (EAD) will once again be responsible for winter maintenance on roads and bike paths within the city limits. However, property owners are responsible for clearing snow and ice from sidewalks.
In this context, the EAD (Darmstadt Waste Management Authority) points out the applicable rules for the use of de-icing agents. Furthermore, Darmstadt residents can once again collect small quantities of grit free of charge at the EAD recycling center.
Who is responsible for clearing snow and ice in Darmstadt?
In Darmstadt, responsibilities for winter maintenance are divided between the EAD (Darmstadt Waste Management Authority) and the property owners.
The EAD (Energy and Water Management Department) is responsible for clearing snow and ice from roads and cycle paths within the city limits. Its aim is to maintain traffic safety even during winter weather conditions.
However, the respective property owners are responsible for the sidewalks. They must ensure that snow and ice are removed.
The relevant regulations are laid down in the street cleaning statute of the city of Darmstadt.
Road salt is only permitted in icy conditions and freezing rain
Special regulations apply in Darmstadt to the use of spreading agents.
Road salt may only be used in icy conditions or freezing rain. The same restriction applies to de-icing materials containing chemical de-icing agents such as urea, ammonium salts, phosphates, or similar substances.
Alternatively, abrasive spreading materials such as grit or sand can be used.
However, these materials should also be used sparingly. The EAD recommends spreading only as much grit or sand on snow residue as is necessary to ensure road safety.
Up to 20 liters of gravel are available free of charge from the EAD
To support citizens with winter maintenance, the EAD is once again offering free grit distribution.
Residents of Darmstadt can now pick up small quantities of gravel at the recycling center at Sensfelderweg 33. The maximum quantity is limited to 20 liters.
The gravel can be collected during the regular opening hours of the recycling center.
