The city and the savings bank are redesigning traffic and green spaces
The city council of Darmstadt has approved the redesign of traffic and green spaces in the area of Hügelstraße and Schützenstraße. These measures are related to the conversion of a former savings bank building into residential space in Darmstadt's city center.
The property is owned by Sparkasse Darmstadt und Dieburg. As part of the conversion of the existing savings bank building into a residential building, the adjacent public areas will also be reorganized and upgraded.
Sidewalks will be adapted
The plan is to redesign the sidewalks in front of the building, extending them to the edge of the road. These measures will be carried out in coordination with the Mobility and Civil Engineering Office.
Furthermore, the existing planters at the intersection of Hügelstraße and Schützenstraße will be removed. In their place, a new public green space will be created in the area of the pedestrian underpass beneath Hügelstraße.
New green space with native plants
The new green space will be planted with field maples and various perennials. The aim is to make the public space more attractive and to improve the quality of life in the area surrounding the building.
“We are pleased to be able to support housing construction in the city center, the use of embodied energy from existing buildings and at the same time an improvement in the quality of public space with this measure in cooperation with the Sparkasse Darmstadt and Dieburg,” explain Mobility Officer Paul Georg Wandrey and Planning Officer Michael Kolmer.
The client is taking over the implementation
The implementation of the traffic and green spaces is being carried out by Sparkasse Darmstadt und Dieburg as the client. This is based on an execution plan approved by the city.
Based on the city council's decision, a construction and financing agreement will be concluded between the city of Darmstadt and the savings bank.
The measure includes the adaptation of footpaths in parts of Hügel- and Schützenstraße, the redesign of the access to the pedestrian underpass, and the creation and maintenance of the new green space.
Once completed, the city will take over the facilities free of charge. No street improvement fees will be levied on the affected properties.
