Rally for IDAHOBIT* with Mayor Hanno Benz and the association vielbunt
On Saturday, May 17, 2025, the City of Darmstadt and the association vielbunt e. V. for a rally to mark the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia, Transphobia and Queerphobia (IDAHOBITA). The event will begin at 12 noon at the memorial "The Dark Side of the Rainbow" in Herrngarten (in front of the Welcome Hotel).
Mayor Benz: "Standing together against hatred and exclusion"
Under this year's motto, "The Power of Communities," the strength of solidarity alliances will be emphasized. Mayor Hanno Benz will deliver a welcoming address. He explains:
"Ideologies that oppose the rights of the LGBTQ+ community also call into question our free and democratic order. Therefore, it is important that we, as a city, support the queer community together with a broad alliance."
Rainbow flag as a symbol of visibility
The rainbow flag will be raised during the rally in front of the Welcome Hotel – a powerful symbol against discrimination and for diversity. Additionally, the rainbow flag will fly in Luisenplatz from May 17th to 23rd .
The city of Darmstadt and vielbunt e. V. have been actively working for years against exclusion and for the visibility of queer people.
Background: Why May 17th?
On May 17, 1990, the World Health Organization homosexuality from its list of mental disorders. Since then, this date has been observed worldwide as IDAHOBIT, the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, and for the Recognition of Sexual and Gender Diversity.
