At the Leeheim Fruit and Horticulture Association, children from the Sonnenschein daycare center learn how apples are harvested and processed into juice
Where do apples come from and how is apple juice made? These were the questions explored by children at the Sonnenschein daycare center in Riedstadt-Erfelden during an apple project. They visited the Leeheim fruit and gardening club and then made their own apple juice at their daycare center.
At the fruit and gardening club, the children were welcomed by Werner Steinmetz and Peter Phillip. The two showed them the apple trees and explained what is important during the harvest.
From apple harvest to juice press
Together, the children shook an apple tree so that the ripe fruit fell to the ground. Afterwards, they collected the apples and learned how to distinguish between good and damaged fruit. They also learned that apples can get sunburned in strong sunlight.
To conclude the visit, Peter Phillip played a song he had composed himself for the children on his guitar.
Back at the Sonnenschein daycare center, the apple project continued. Using an apple press, the children processed their collected fruit into fresh apple juice. This allowed them to experience the individual steps from harvesting to the finished drink firsthand.
