Nature enthusiasts can observe butterflies in Mönchbruch on September 4th
An evening excursion on Friday, September 4, 2026, will lead into the world of moths. From 7:30 p.m., up to 15 participants can observe various species in the heathland on the edge of the Mönchbruch near Kelsterbach and learn more about their way of life.
The event, organized by the Lower Nature Conservation Authority (UNB) of the Groß-Gerau district, is aimed at all nature enthusiasts. No prior knowledge is required. The excursion will be led by moth expert Erik Opper.
Observe moths using a special lighting system
Unlike the often more conspicuous butterflies, many moth species only become active at dusk or in the dark. These include hawk moths, silk moths, geometrid moths, and owlet moths. They vary greatly in size, shape, and lifestyle, and play an important role as pollinators.
During the excursion, Erik Opper explains the animals' way of life. A special lighting system is used to attract moths, allowing participants to observe and identify different species up close.
