More than 200 megawatts already installed – a win for the economy and the climate
The expansion of photovoltaics in the Groß-Gerau district is significantly exceeding the originally set targets. This is shown by a recent analysis from the district's climate protection department. Back in 2022, the district had already set itself the goal of installing around 15 megawatts (MW) of new capacity annually in order to reach a total of 200 MW by 2030. This target has now been achieved ahead of schedule: By the end of 2025, approximately 213 MW of gross capacity had already been installed.
In 2025 alone, 2,390 new photovoltaic systems with a capacity of approximately 46 MW were commissioned throughout the district. In 2024, this figure was nearly 3,100 systems with a capacity of around 33 MW. The largest new system was built in 2025 in Riedstadt on the premises of the Altmann company. This photovoltaic system, constructed as a carport, has a capacity of approximately 16.8 MWp and would have been sufficient on its own to achieve the annual target. This underscores both the technological development and the economic attractiveness of renewable energies.
First Deputy District Administrator Adil Oyan sees this as a clear success of collaborative action: “From the very beginning, it was important to me to win people over to this proven technology – not only for ecological reasons, but also because it is economically sound. The fact that we have already reached the target for 2030 is thanks to the commitment of citizens, companies, farmers and municipalities.”
Thousands of facilities throughout the district
Most of the systems were installed in 2023 – around 3,350 units. In total, there are now approximately 14,450 solar power systems in operation in the Groß-Gerau district. Around 75 percent of these are building-integrated solar systems, while about 25 percent are plug-and-play solar systems, so-called balcony power plants.
Rüsselsheim leads the way with nearly 2,400 installations, meaning that around 22 percent of buildings have a photovoltaic system or balcony power plant installed. Riedstadt follows with 1,910 installations, and Groß-Gerau with 1,716. The majority of photovoltaic systems are designed for self-consumption: only about 15 percent feed all the generated electricity into the grid, while 85 percent use the electricity on-site.
New goals and consulting services planned
In light of this positive development, the district now intends to formulate new, more ambitious goals for the period up to 2030. The aim is to further accelerate expansion, strengthen regional value creation, and make a significant contribution to the district's climate-neutral future.
To support residents, the district offers free photovoltaic consultations every Tuesday. Those interested can contact klima@kreisgg.de or learn more about the Groß-Gerau district's solar campaign . Furthermore, the Climate Protection Department is planning another information event on photovoltaic systems for private households at the district administration office on April 20, 2026. Registration details will be announced in due course.
