Around 70 drawings and video documentaries in the new exhibition space
With an exhibition by Darmstadt artist Rainer Lind, the EPES Gallery opens its new premises in the PAMO district at Mainzer Straße 79 in Darmstadt. Titled "In the Puddles of Erosion," the exhibition will feature approximately 70 drawings and several video documentaries starting Thursday, November 5, 2026. It offers a comprehensive overview of the artist's diverse work.
Spanning over 300 square meters, the gallery is presenting a larger selection of Lind's work for the first time in this new setting. The focus is on works that straddle the line between drawing and painting, complemented by video landscapes.
Experimental materials and different techniques
Rainer Lind works with unusual combinations of materials. Linseed oil, iron oxide, graphite, and shellac are used on canvas, cardboard, or paper. The changes the materials undergo during drying also play an important role.
Through the processes of fading, fraying, and drying, forms and structures emerge that the artist takes up, controls, and develops further. Bold charcoal strokes meet fine pencil lines; flowing movements alternate with abrupt interruptions.
Recurring motifs become visible in the framing and internal structures of his works. These include, in particular, landscapes and figures, which Lind takes up in different forms and contexts.
Drawings and video documentation
In addition to the approximately 70 drawings, video landscape documentaries are shown on several monitors. The exhibition thus illustrates the diverse artistic forms of expression that Lind has explored for many years.
Another event is scheduled for Thursday, November 12th. On that evening, starting at 7 pm, Rainer Lind will present and comment on a selection of his video interviews.
The exhibition ends on Thursday, November 19th, with a closing event at 7 pm.
Artists with close ties to Darmstadt
Rainer Lind studied design at the former Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences from 1975 to 1979 and continued his training at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Gotthard Graubner in 1980 and 1981.
In 1983 he received an award from the Darmstadt Secession, of which he has been a member ever since. Three years later he was awarded the Georg Christoph Lichtenberg Prize for Painting by the Darmstadt-Dieburg district. In 1989 he received a scholarship from the state of Hesse for a residency at the Casa Baldi in Olevano Romano.
In addition to his visual art, Lind has been involved with music, multimedia, and video projects for many years. Since 2001, he has been a lecturer in multimedia and web applications at Philipps University of Marburg. Starting in the winter semester of 2026, he will also take on a teaching position in interviews and video formats at the Institute for Media Studies there.
Lind has also been, or is currently, active in teaching at the TU Darmstadt and the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences.
