The road surface will be renewed in three construction phases – the work will take approximately six weeks
Road resurfacing work began on Mainzer Straße in Darmstadt on Monday, October 5th. As part of the 2026 road rehabilitation program, the asphalt surface layer between Pallaswiesenstraße and Michaelisstraße is being renewed. The affected section runs from the intersection of Bunsenstraße and Michaelisstraße, past the junction with Akazienweg.
The renovation is expected to take approximately six weeks. According to the city, the total cost amounts to about 330,000 euros.
Three construction phases with partial road closures
The work will be carried out in three phases. During each phase, Mainzer Straße will be closed to one lane at a time, and traffic will be controlled by a traffic light system, allowing it to pass the construction site in alternating directions.
In the first construction phase, which began on October 5th, the Bunsenstraße industrial park can be accessed and exited both inbound and outbound.
The second phase of construction is expected to begin on October 22nd. From then on, access to the industrial park will only be possible from the direction of the city center. Exit will only be possible in the direction of the city center.
For the third construction phase, which is expected to begin at the beginning of November, the traffic flow will change again: Entry will then only be possible from the direction of Weiterstadt, and exit only in the direction of Weiterstadt.
Akazienweg closed for approximately four weeks
Due to the alternating traffic flow, the intersection of Akazienweg and Mainzer Straße will remain closed to motorized traffic for approximately four weeks until the beginning of November. As a replacement, the Mobility and Civil Engineering Office is setting up a temporary access route from Michaelisstraße to Gehaborner Weg.
Public transport will operate according to schedule throughout the entire construction period. The bus stops in the direction of Weiterstadt will be temporarily relocated behind the construction site.
