The city of Darmstadt is cutting back vegetation on a 250-meter-long path to the Ottilienmühle
The path between the street "In den Niederwiesen" and the Ottilienmühle mill in Darmstadt-Wixhausen is now more accessible. The City of Darmstadt has had the vegetation along the approximately 250-meter-long path trimmed back, providing pedestrians with more space.
The work was carried out on behalf of the city's Mobility and Civil Engineering Office. Head of Transportation Paul Georg Wandrey informed the city council about the project at its meeting on November 4, 2026.
The local council had suggested improvements
The work was prompted by a request from the Wixhausen local council. They had suggested that the city council should approve the restoration of the field path.
The path had previously been significantly narrowed in some places by vegetation growing inwards from the sides. This increasingly restricted its use.
“The existing vegetation had previously significantly restricted the usable width of the path in some places,” explains City Councillor Paul Georg Wandrey.
No structural renovation due to cost reasons
Due to its tight budget situation, the city was unable to implement a comprehensive renovation of the road surface or a structural widening.
Instead, a more cost-effective solution was chosen to improve the accessibility of the path, at least in the short term.
“However, given the city’s budget situation and the limited funds available, a structural renovation of the road surface or a widening of the road was not possible,” Wandrey explains.
Despite cutting back the vegetation, the usable width of the path could still be increased.
"Thanks to the clearing work, we were able to improve the usability of the popular field path in a low-threshold way," said the transport officer.
