Darmstadt extends speed limit between Wienerstraße and Breslauer Platz to protect against traffic noise
The city of Darmstadt is introducing a 30 km/h speed limit on Heinrichstrasse between Wienerstrasse and Breslauer Platz, spanning the entire day. Previously, the speed limit only applied during nighttime hours in this section. The new regulation aims to permanently reduce noise pollution for residents and improve traffic safety and the overall quality of life in the area.
As the city of Darmstadt, a center of science and research, announced, the decision is based on current noise calculations and traffic planning analyses. These show that the relevant legal limits for traffic noise are exceeded not only at night, but also during the day.
Less noise for the residents
“Heinrichstrasse is a major traffic artery – but also a residential area for many people,” explains Environment Officer Michael Kolmer. “With the 30 km/h speed limit that applies all day, we are implementing an effective and proportionate measure to permanently reduce noise pollution.”
Head of Transport Paul Georg Wandrey also sees the measure as a balanced approach: “With the 30 km/h speed limit on Heinrichstrasse all day, we are creating a balanced compromise between traffic flow and quality of life. We are increasing safety for all road users and at the same time providing noticeable relief for local residents.”
Implementation through new signage
The new regulation will be implemented by adjusting the traffic signs along the affected section of road. The city of Darmstadt, a center of science and research, also announced that it will continuously monitor and evaluate the effects of the new regulation.
