Watering holes for birds and insects can save lives during a heat wave
The ongoing drought and high temperatures are taking their toll not only on people, but also on many animals. The city of Weiterstadt is therefore calling on residents to help birds, insects, hedgehogs, and other wildlife through the heat wave with simple measures.
The city reports that more and more natural water sources, ditches, and ponds are currently drying up. Birds, insects, and crepuscular hedgehogs are particularly affected, as they are increasingly weakened when searching for food.
Bowls of water can save lives
Even a shallow dish of fresh water in the garden, on the patio, or on the balcony can help the animals. The water should be changed daily and the dish cleaned regularly.
To ensure that even small insects can drink safely, the city recommends placing a stone or a piece of wood in the water bowl. This gives the insects something to hold onto and allows them to climb out again afterwards.
Avoiding hazards at rain barrels and garden ponds
Garden ponds, swimming pools, and rain barrels can also pose a danger to wildlife. Therefore, they should be equipped with escape aids or – in the case of rain barrels – covered if possible.
For example, angled boards can be used as a simple solution, allowing animals to climb out of the water. These measures are useful not only during heat waves, but all year round.
Even city trees need water
Besides the animals, street trees and public green spaces are also suffering from the ongoing drought. The city is therefore asking all residents to water the trees in front of their houses if possible.
Furthermore, the city reminds residents to pay particular attention to elderly neighbors and relatives during the hot days and to offer support if needed – for example, by providing drinks or running small errands.
