Restrictions on the main road from Sunday to Monday morning
Roadworks will be carried out on the B3 federal highway near Darmstadt-Wixhausen this weekend. Hessen Mobil reports that the work will begin on Sunday at 5 a.m. and is scheduled to be completed by Monday, June 22, at 5 a.m.
The aim of the project is to improve road surface grip on a roughly 300-meter-long section of the B3 highway in the direction of Wixhausen. The affected area is between the Frankfurter Landstraße junction and the Hindemithstraße intersection. Additionally, the right-turn lane onto Frankfurter Landstraße will be resurfaced.
B3 remains open to traffic
The work will be carried out under a partial road closure. The main road will remain open to traffic in both directions throughout the entire construction period. Traffic will be regulated by a traffic light system.
The junction with Frankfurter Landstraße will be completely closed. The signposted detour leads via the B3 southwards to Virchowstraße and from there back to Frankfurter Landstraße.
The exit from Hindemithstraße towards Darmstadt will also be closed during the works. The detour will be via Schönbergstraße.
In addition, the maximum permitted speed on the B3 in the construction zone will be reduced to 50 kilometers per hour.
Thin asphalt surface course in cold construction
According to Hessen Mobil, a grip test revealed defects in the road surface on the affected section of road. Cracks were also found in some parts of the asphalt.
For the repair, a so-called thin asphalt surface course is applied using cold construction methods (DSK). This consists of a layer approximately five millimeters thick, made of fine-grained aggregates and special bitumen emulsions.
First, the existing road markings will be removed and the road surface cleaned. Then, the new surface layer will be applied. After it has cooled, the road markings will be renewed. This work is scheduled to be carried out on a later weekend, requiring another lane closure.
The federal government bears the costs
The project will cost approximately €118,000. The work is being financed by the federal government.
