Professor Christian Koch takes over the leadership from Professor Martin Welte
There has been a change at the top of the Department of Anesthesiology and Surgical Intensive Care at Darmstadt Hospital . Since July 1, 2026, Prof. Dr. Christian Koch has been the head of the department. He succeeds Prof. Dr. Martin Welte , who retired after more than 24 years at the hospital.
Welte's departure marks the end of a defining era. Since he took office in 2002, the clinic has developed into one of the leading centers for anesthesiology, intensive care medicine, pain therapy and emergency medicine in southern Hesse.
Clinic and intensive care unit expanded
During his tenure, numerous medical services were expanded. These included the establishment of an ECMO center, the introduction of modern cardiopulmonary support procedures, the expansion of pain management services, and additional intensive care treatment capacities. The hospital also experienced significant staff growth – from approximately 30 to around 70 physicians.
Furthermore, Welte, as Medical Director and, at times, Medical Managing Director, assumed responsibility for the development of the entire hospital. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he was one of the key figures responsible for the care of seriously ill patients in the region.
His successor comes from Giessen
His successor , Prof. Dr. Christian Koch, is moving from the University Hospital of Giessen and Marburg to Darmstadt. The 45-year-old was most recently the managing senior physician of the Clinic for Anesthesiology, Surgical Intensive Care and Pain Therapy there.
His scientific focus areas include sepsis, intensive care medicine, extracorporeal organ support procedures, hemodynamics , and perioperative risk management. In addition to numerous supplementary qualifications, Koch has over 100 scientific publications and has received several awards for his research.
Focus on clinics in southern Hesse
At Darmstadt Hospital, Koch aims to further develop the departments of anesthesiology, intensive care, and emergency medicine. Plans include expanding ECMO services, strengthening perioperative risk management, and contributing to the development of the emerging South Hesse Clinics.
Medical Director Dr. Jörg Noetzel praised the outgoing clinic director for his many years of service and expressed his conviction that with Christian Koch they had found a professionally and personally convincing successor for the future challenges.
