The mayor looks back on social policy, crisis management and future tasks
Barbara Akdeniz has taken stock of her work to date as Head of Social Services and Mayor of the science city of Darmstadt. She has been Mayor since July 16, 2021 – the first woman in the city's history to hold this office. For the past 15 years, she has also been responsible for social services, children and youth, housing, and women's policy.
At a press conference, Akdeniz looked back on numerous political decisions and challenges. According to the city, she submitted more than 750 proposals . She was also temporarily responsible for climate protection, the environment, aircraft noise, air pollution control, green spaces, and sports.
Crises have shaped the past few years
A key focus of her term in office was exceptional crises. These included the reception of refugees since 2015, managing the Corona pandemic and its impact on daycare centers and nursing homes, and supporting people who came to Darmstadt after the Russian attack on Ukraine.
Akdeniz emphasized that these tasks were only possible through close cooperation with social service providers, welfare associations and numerous volunteers.
Social challenges remain significant
The mayor also sees a high need for action in the future. Issues such as increasing poverty risk, housing shortages, unemployment, psychosocial stress, and the compatibility of family and career will continue to occupy the city.
She advocated strengthening prevention as an important component of social policy and continuing to provide targeted support, especially for children, young people, families, older people and people in difficult life situations.
Akdeniz announced her intention to continue her work with this focus. The goal remains a social policy that opens up opportunities for people and strengthens social cohesion.
