Jorin Sandau will perform works by Bach, Buxtehude and other composers on October 31st – admission is free
With an organ concert on Reformation Day, the Catholic church of St. Ludwig in Darmstadt's city center will participate in the commemorations of "500 Years of Reformation in Darmstadt" on Saturday, October 31, 2026. Under the title "Now Rejoice, Dear Christians," regional cantor Jorin Sandau will perform arrangements of Reformation hymns from various centuries, beginning at 6:00 p.m. An introduction to the program will begin at 5:30 p.m.
The concert places the music of the Reformation in an ecumenical context. Works from the Protestant tradition will be performed on the Winterhalter organ, as well as compositions of French organ music influenced by Catholic tradition.
Reformation hymns from different centuries
The program includes works by Johann Sebastian Bach and Dietrich Buxtehude, among others. These are complemented by compositions from the French organ symphonic repertoire by Naji Hakim and Jean Langlais.
A regional connection is established by smaller works by Wolfgang Carl Briegel and Christian Heinrich Rinck, which are linked to Darmstadt's musical history.
The concert concludes with an arrangement of the final movement from Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's Reformation Symphony.
In the introduction at 5:30 pm, Jorin Sandau explains the background to the compositions and their creation.
