A look behind the scenes on September 19th with hands-on activities, advice and a free shuttle bus
The EAD Environmental and Family Day will take place on Saturday, September 19, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the company premises at Sensfelderweg 33 in Darmstadt. At this 28th edition of the event, the municipal services and infrastructure company (EAD) will offer insights into its work. The program includes hands-on activities, information booths, and events for children and adults.
Visitors can, among other things, ride along on a street sweeper and a garbage truck, try out a bicycle course, or visit the repair café. There's also a bungee trampoline, bouncy castle and giant slide, face painting, and a target shooting game with SV Darmstadt 98.
Information services cover topics such as the soil of Darmstadt, digitalization, electromobility and biochar.
Theatre, art and AI offerings
"Mr. Stinknich" explores the topic of waste through a blend of theatre and puppetry. The artist Jörn Heilmann presents his work in the context of the circular economy.
In the foyer of the EAD administration building, children can use artificial intelligence to create their own games or use an animated Darmstadt hidden picture puzzle.
For the first time, according to the EAD (Darmstadt Waste Management Authority), Darmstadt's workshops and residential facilities, Fitness First, Foodsharing Darmstadt, Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, and the Makerspace are participating. Further information will be provided by, among others, AOK (a German health insurance company), the mobile library, BUND Darmstadt (Friends of the Earth Germany), the Darmstadt Recycling Center, NABU Darmstadt (Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union), the South Hesse Police, the Darmstadt Animal Shelter, and the Vivarium Zoo. EAD facilities such as the recycling center, composting plant, and carbonization plant will also be presenting their work.
Broken devices can be dropped off at the Repair Café until 2 p.m. Food, drinks, and coffee will be available on site. According to the organizers, children will also receive free ice cream.
Free shuttle bus from the city center
Since parking around the EAD premises is limited, a free shuttle bus in operation. This bus will run from the "Holzstraße" stop at the Justus-Liebig-Haus to the EAD and back.
The first bus departs at 10:00 AM, followed by a bus every half hour. The last return trip from EAD to the city center is scheduled for 3:30 PM .
Guided tours of the pointed bunker on the company premises will not be offered this year for safety reasons.
Important for visitors to the recycling center: The EAD recycling center and the special waste collection point will remain closed on Saturday, September 19th.
