The Darmstadt Music Society invites you to a concert in St. Paul's Church
Under the title "Tragedy and Consolation," the Darmstadt Music Society invites you to a concert at St. Paul's Church in Darmstadt on Saturday, November 14, 2026, at 7 p.m. The program features two important works by Johannes Brahms: the "Tragic Overture" Op. 81 and "A German Requiem" Op. 45. Both compositions explore, in different ways, fundamental human experiences of pain, transience, and hope.
A tragic overture full of dramatic power
The concert evening begins with Johannes Brahms' "Tragic Overture" op. 81. The orchestral work is characterized by its dramatic power and a suspenseful musical development.
Brahms doesn't tell a specific story in it. Rather, the music conveys feelings of tragedy, inner struggle, and inescapable tension. Contrasting musical moods characterize the work and leave room for personal interpretation.
German Requiem unites suffering and hope
The program continues with “A German Requiem” op. 45, one of the most important works of sacred choral music of the 19th century.
In it, Brahms combines selected biblical texts into a musical exploration of transience, death, and life. The focus is not solely on mourning the deceased, but especially on offering solace to the bereaved.
The work encompasses a wide spectrum of human emotions. Pain and confidence, transience and hope stand in contrast to one another and are connected through the music.
Two musical perspectives on life
The pairing of these two works forms the conceptual framework of the concert evening. The "Tragic Overture" leads into a musical world full of tension and pain. The "German Requiem" contrasts this with a message of comfort and hope.
Under the motto "Tragedy and Consolation", the Darmstadt Music Society is presenting a concert evening that musically explores the contrasts of human existence.
