Documentary “…and then came the Americans” on May 8th at the Rex Cinema
The science city of Darmstadt is commemorating the end of World War II with a special film screening: On May 8, 2026, the documentary “…and then came the Americans – How children experienced the end of the war in Darmstadt” will be shown at the Rex arthouse cinema in Darmstadt. The screening begins at 5:30 p.m.
Eyewitnesses report on the end of the war in 1945
May 8th is considered Liberation Day and in 2026 marks the 81st anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe. The film focuses on residents of Darmstadt who experienced the end of the war as children.
They recount stories of fear, deprivation, and uncertainty – but also of hope and the first moments of peace. These personal recollections are complemented by historical photographs, letters, and diaries.
Continuation of a well-known film project
The documentary follows on from the film "Brandmale" (Marks of Destruction), which deals with the consequences of the destruction of Darmstadt. The new work premiered on the anniversary of the Darmstadt firebombing in September.
The project was initiated by the Hans Erich and Marie Elfriede Dotter Foundation and implemented in cooperation with the Dieburg Film Club.
Appeal for Peace and Remembrance
Mayor Hanno Benz praised the documentary as an important historical document. Especially in a time when fewer and fewer eyewitnesses are able to share their stories, it is crucial to record their experiences.
The film ends with a powerful appeal not to take peace and freedom for granted.
DVD available from May 8th
In addition to its theatrical release, the film will also be available on DVD from May 8th. It can be purchased for nine euros at the Dotter Foundation in Eberstadt and in the town hall foyer.
Admission to the film screening is free, but a seat reservation is required.
