Environmental officer Kolmer calls for particular caution – forest fire danger level 5 expected
The ongoing drought and high temperatures have led to a very high risk of forest fires. The Hessian Ministry of Agriculture and the Environment has therefore alert level A of the forest protection alert plan for the entire state of Hesse. Particularly vulnerable forest areas are being more closely monitored, and the operational readiness of the forestry administration has been increased.
According to current forecasts from the German Weather Service, the highest warning level for forest fire danger, level 5 , is expected for the Darmstadt region in the coming days
In response, grilling is now prohibited at the city's Oberförsterwiese barbecue area, as well as in all green spaces, areas near bodies of water, and throughout the entire city forest. The ban will remain in effect until further notice.
"The ongoing drought makes our forests particularly vulnerable to fires. Darmstadt's city forest is not only a valuable habitat for numerous animal and plant species, but also an important place for recreation and an indispensable component of climate protection. Everyone can contribute to preventing forest fires by acting responsibly. I therefore urge all forest visitors to consistently adhere to the applicable rules of conduct and thus protect our city forest," appeals Environmental Officer Michael Kolmer.
Since no significant rainfall is expected, the city of Darmstadt is asking all citizens to exercise particular caution. The following rules of conduct apply in particular:
- Smoking is strictly prohibited in the forest.
- Cigarette butts or other smoldering objects must never be thrown away.
- Vehicles may only be parked in designated parking areas, as hot vehicle parts can ignite dry grass.
- Forest roads and access routes must be kept clear at all times for fire brigades and rescue services.
Anyone who discovers smoke or a fire should immediately call the emergency number 112 and describe the location of the fire as precisely as possible.
