Heiligenberg Forum discusses great power politics and the future of Europe
The Heiligenberg Forum at Heiligenberg Castle focused on how Europe is responding to changing geopolitical conditions. Under the title "Europe without protection?", experts discussed the current security situation on the continent.
Scientific perspective on global developments
Moderated by Anja Simon, the audience received a comprehensive analysis from peace researcher Sascha Hach of the Leibniz Institute Hessian Foundation for Peace and Conflict Research. The focus was particularly on the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine and the changing foreign policy priorities of the USA.
According to the expert, Russia's behavior currently poses a direct challenge for Europe. At the same time, uncertainty is growing regarding the role of the US as a reliable partner.
Changes in international politics
Political developments in the United States since 2025 have led to a fundamental shift in policy. Support for Ukraine has declined, while new diplomatic constellations are emerging between the major powers.
Europe is responding with increased support for Ukraine, but must increasingly deploy its own resources in the process. At the same time, the EU's role in international negotiations has so far been limited.
Discussion about Europe's defense capabilities
A central point of the event was the question of Europe's military independence. According to Hach, while the European Union possesses economic strength, it lacks sufficient military structures to defend itself independently.
The discussion also touched upon the possibility of a European nuclear umbrella. According to research, Europe remains dependent on US security guarantees.
Perspectives for the future
Possible strategies mentioned included increased international cooperation and new diplomatic approaches. The goal must be to compensate for Europe's security policy deficits while simultaneously strengthening its own capacity for action.
The head of the forum, Gerd Zboril, announced that the Heiligenberg Forum would continue to focus intensively on developments in European security policy.
