The parliamentary group is calling for wider sidewalks and improved amenities at the hospital
The Green Party faction in the Darmstadt city council supports the planned redesign of the traffic flow on Grafenstraße. At the same time, the Greens have submitted an amendment to expand the plans in key areas.
According to the parliamentary group, the measure is intended not only to benefit cycling, but also to improve the quality of life and accessibility in the vicinity of the hospital.
Widening the footpaths at the government headquarters
One key aspect of the amendment concerns the situation for pedestrians in the area of the regional government offices. In some places, the sidewalks are only about one meter wide.
The Green Party is advocating for sidewalks to be widened to at least 1.50 meters, but preferably to over 1.60 meters. The goal is to ensure safe and comfortable use for all road users, especially people with mobility impairments.
Proposed lounge area at the hospital
Furthermore, the parliamentary group proposes making the former parking areas at the materials testing institute, which have been fenced off for years, usable as a recreational area.
Possible uses include seating, shade structures, mobile greenery, or initial measures to remove impervious surfaces. According to the Green Party, these areas could benefit patients, visitors, and hospital staff.
Long-term development of the environment
According to the Greens, the current proposal from the city council is a first step towards a more comprehensive development of the area around the hospital.
Long-term goals include barrier-free and shaded footpaths, additional green spaces, further de-sealing measures, and an attractive cycle connection between Zimmerstrasse and Grafenstrasse as an alternative to the pedestrian zone.
The parliamentary group also believes that the future management of public transport should be discussed further. This should include examining whether routing bus line L via Grafenstraße is sensible and feasible.
Approval of the city council proposal announced
The Green Party has announced its intention to approve the city council's proposal to redesign the traffic flow on Grafenstraße. With their amendment, they aim to place greater emphasis on the long-term development of an attractive, accessible, and green environment around the hospital.
