The city is reorganizing street space and improving conditions for cycling and walking
The city of Darmstadt will begin reorganizing the streetscape on Heinrich-Fuhr-Straße between Beckstraße and Heidenreichstraße on Monday, June 22, 2026. The aim of the project is to increase traffic safety and improve visibility, especially for pedestrians and cyclists.
Critical situations should be defused
Heinrich-Fuhr-Straße is designated as a one-way street heading east. At the same time, it is open to cyclists traveling in the opposite direction. Due to the narrow roadway, passing places have already been created to allow cyclists and motorists to pass each other safely.
According to the city, the current parking layout obstructs the view of these areas. Particularly in the western section of the street, this has repeatedly led to dangerous situations between cars and bicycles. The problem was brought to the attention of residents.
Improved visibility and safer crossings
As part of the redesign, areas will be reorganized and additional sightlines will be kept clear. The intersection of Heinrich-Fuhr-Straße and Beckstraße will also be modified.
The currently generous turning radii are to be reduced. This will lower turning speeds and shorten crossing distances for pedestrians. This should make the intersection clearer and safer.
In addition, the city is setting up a parking area for bicycles and e-scooters. Furthermore, visibility at the pedestrian crossing to Woogsdamm will be improved, and a pedestrian crossing for safe crossing of Beckstraße will be permanently kept clear.
Better overview for all road users
“The current arrangement of the parking spaces makes it difficult to see these areas, so that especially in the western section of Heinrich-Fuhr-Straße there are repeatedly critical situations between cyclists and motorists,” explains mobility officer Paul Georg Wandrey.
The planned measures will improve safety and clarity for all road users, especially for people traveling on foot or by bicycle.
