Kranichsteiner Straße will be completely closed from June 22nd during the summer holidays
Construction work to widen Jägertorstraße in Darmstadt is progressing according to schedule. The current construction phase between Hammelstrift and Siemensstraße is expected to be completed in June and subsequently opened to traffic.
The next construction phase will begin immediately afterwards. From approximately June 17, 2026, work will continue in the area between Jägertorstraße 250 (Lidl entrance) and Kranichsteiner Straße. According to current plans, this section is scheduled for completion in early September.
Complete closure of Kranichsteiner Straße
To carry out the work, Kranichsteiner Straße will be completely closed in both directions between Bartningstraße and Jägertorstraße from June 22, 2026.
As transport officer Paul Georg Wandrey explains, this construction phase was deliberately scheduled for the quieter period of the summer holidays in order to minimize the impact on traffic.
As part of the works, the asphalt surface of Kranichsteiner Straße will be renewed. In addition, the existing sidewalk on the Jägertor Oak side will be extended to Jägertorstraße. This will create a continuous pedestrian and bicycle path. Furthermore, the street lighting will be modernized. Traffic lights will be installed at the intersection of Kranichsteiner Straße and Jägertorstraße to regulate traffic flow.
Detours and access to the Lidl supermarket
During the full closure, traffic will be diverted via Bartningstraße, Siemensstraße and Jägertorstraße. Access to the Lidl supermarket will remain possible via Jägertorstraße.
The existing large-scale detour will be lifted for now. However, it will be necessary again for a later construction phase.
Information panel for Kranichstein hunting lodge returns
The restoration of the historic information panel for Kranichstein Hunting Lodge is nearing completion. A site near the previous location has been chosen for its new placement. The panel will be erected on the new footpath along Kranichsteiner Straße, near the Lidl supermarket.
Expansion planned until autumn 2026
Jägertorstraße is the only direct connection between the districts of Arheilgen and Kranichstein and has an important function for traffic distribution in the north of Darmstadt.
As part of the overall project, the roadway will be completely renewed, new footpaths will be created, the side areas will be redesigned and a continuous cycle route will be established.
Construction work has been underway since April 2025. The entire project is scheduled for completion in autumn 2026.
