The city will become part of the "Living Democracy!" program
Darmstadt has once again been accepted into the federal program "Democracy Live!". This means the city of science will receive funding from the Federal Ministry of Education, Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth to support projects promoting democracy, diversity, and social cohesion.
Funding for clubs, schools and initiatives
The city will receive future funding as a so-called "Partnership for Democracy".
Mayor Hanno Benz explains: “We are extremely pleased about the reinstatement in the federal program, which sends an important signal against extremism and intolerance.”
The funding is intended to provide targeted support for local clubs, schools and initiatives in the future.
The Protestant deanery takes over specialist position
As part of the program, Darmstadt is establishing a coordinating office and a local action and initiative fund.
The Protestant Deanery of Darmstadt will take over the specialist position.
Dean Dr. Raimund Wirth emphasizes: "As an Evangelical Church, we stand for the dignity of every human being and peaceful coexistence."
Projects against extremism and for diversity planned
Among other things, the following will be supported in the future:
- Democracy workshops
- intercultural festivals
- Information and education programs
- Projects against extremism and hate online
According to the city, both analog and digital services will be strengthened.
Alliance for Democracy planned
In addition, a local alliance for democracy is to be founded.
The aim is for representatives from politics, administration and civil society to jointly discuss funding projects and thematic priorities.
An initial information event for interested citizens and associations is already planned.
Federal program with nationwide significance
The program “Democracy Live!” supports municipalities and organizations nationwide in promoting democracy education, social cohesion and extremism prevention.
Currently, there are already 355 municipal partnerships across Germany within the framework of the program.
