One-way traffic regulations are already in place – parking on sidewalks will no longer be allowed in the future
The renovation of Magdalenenstraße in Darmstadt began on Monday, August 31, 2026.The road surface will be renewed until approximately Friday, September 18. At the same time, the city is taking the opportunity to reorganize traffic flow. Among other things, parking spaces will be clearly marked and the roadway will be narrowed in sections.
During the construction period, Magdalenenstraße will only be accessible as a one-way street from Alexanderstraße towards Kantplatz. Traffic coming from Kantplatz will be detoured via Schloßgartenstraße and Pallaswiesenstraße. Pedestrian access will remain open.
Access to properties restricted
As part of the renovation, the existing asphalt surface will be milled off and replaced with a new road surface. The city will also renew drainage systems, road fixtures, and road markings.
During the construction work, access to properties along Magdalenenstraße will be restricted. At times, access will be completely blocked during the installation of the new asphalt surface. Affected residents will be informed in advance.
According to the city, the construction costs amount to approximately 80,000 euros.
Sidewalk parking will no longer be allowed
With the new road markings, the parking situation will also change after the renovation is completed. All regular parking spaces will be clearly marked. Parking on the sidewalks, which has been practiced in some cases until now, will no longer be permitted. The existing disabled parking space will also have a pictogram painted on the road.
Another change concerns the road width. Magdalenenstraße will be narrowed in sections, so that vehicles will no longer be able to pass each other everywhere on the road. According to the city, this should reduce speeds and through traffic.
City takes up suggestions from residents
Head of Transport Paul Georg Wandrey points out that feedback from the neighborhood was also taken into account during the planning. "Clear parking regulations, more space for pedestrians, and a speed-reducing road design will contribute to making the street safer and more manageable for all road users in the future," says Wandrey.
