The Groß-Gerau district launches "Midwife on Site" – five midwives are participating in the new alert system at launch
In the Groß-Gerau district, midwives will now be alerted together with the emergency services for unplanned births outside of a hospital . The district is launching the "Midwife on Site" system for this purpose. Five midwives from the district have registered for the initial rollout.
According to the district, the emergency medical service is called out to approximately 10 to 15 unplanned pre-hospital births . These are, for example, births that have progressed so far that transport to a delivery room is no longer possible in time.
Alert via smartphone app
In such cases, participating midwives will in future be alerted simultaneously with the regular emergency services. This requires that an available midwife is located within a radius of approximately 20 minutes' travel time to the scene of the incident.
The alert is georeferenced and sent via a smartphone app, utilizing the technical infrastructure of the "Mobile Responders," which is connected to the county's central control center. If a midwife cannot reach the scene quickly enough herself, the control center will, according to the county, organize transport by emergency vehicle.
“With this system, we ensure that mother and child receive the best possible professional care, even during pre-hospital births,” explains Dr. Marco Renth, Medical Director of Emergency Medical Services for the Groß-Gerau district. He adds that the collaboration with midwives can also support emergency medical personnel during such operations.
More midwives needed
Five midwives are participating in the system at launch. The district wants to expand the network and is therefore looking for more professionals.
There is no obligation to accept a call. Midwives alerted via the app can decline a call if they are unavailable at the time.
