Darmstadt invests in modern sports infrastructure with a two-story hall
The city council of Darmstadt has approved the construction of a new two-story, 2x3-court sports hall in the Bürgerpark. The new hall will replace both the Bürgerparkhalle and the roller sports hall and will be built on the former site of the roller sports hall.
Mayor Hanno Benz, who is also the city's sports commissioner, emphasizes the importance of the project: "Our goal is to realize this project with the greatest possible cost-effectiveness while simultaneously ensuring high quality and functionality. The new roller sports hall will secure school and club sports in Darmstadt for the long term and increase the attractiveness of the sports location for competitions and tournaments."
Functional new building with multifunctional use
The plans call for a triple sports hall with special facilities for roller sports, BMX, and ball sports . The layout is as follows:
- Ground floor: 3-field hall (45 x 22 meters) with banked tracks for roller sports and an additional area for BMX sports
- Upper floor: Column-free 3-field hall (45 x 22 meters), used for school and club sports
A structural analysis commissioned by the German Sports Facility Construction Association (DSE) confirms the economic feasibility of the construction. Furthermore, the needs of the Hessian Roller Sports Association and the requirements for skateboard training were taken into account.
Greater efficiency and better usage options
The new hall will be usable for a wide range of sports . In addition to figure skating, BMX, and skateboarding, classic ball sports such as basketball, volleyball, handball, and badminton will also benefit from the standardized court sizes. This multi-purpose use makes the building particularly efficient and ensures optimal use of space .
Mayor Benz explains: “The dual usage level achieves maximum space efficiency without restricting sports activities. The planning is based on the high occupancy rates of the city's sports halls and secures the long-term need for school sports in Darmstadt.”
Funding and economic implementation
The new building is being constructed using six million euros of federal funds , originally earmarked for the Bürgerparkhalle (Citizens' Park Hall). Compared to earlier plans, the total costs have been reduced by ten million euros
In addition to population growth in Darmstadt, the increasing need for school sports facilities was also taken into account in the needs assessment. The city is also focusing on sustainable materials and technologiesto reduce energy consumption and keep operating costs low in the long term.
With the new roller sports hall, Darmstadt will gain a modern, multifunctional sports facilitythat will strengthen both recreational and competitive sports. Further planning for the construction will take place in the coming months before implementation begins.
