An exhibition in Darmstadt combines watercolors with photographs of parks and architecture
The Vahle Studio House in Darmstadt will open its doors on Sunday, September 13, 2026, for Open Monument Day . This year's focus will be on the property's garden at Schumannstrasse 11, which is also a listed historical monument. At the same time, the exhibition "Architecture and GARDEN – The Connection" featuring watercolors and photographs will open.
The opening reception begins at 11:30 a.m. At 3:00 p.m., Mayor Hanno Benz will welcome the guests. Afterwards, Dr. Christiane Klein will lead a tour of the property and the exhibition, with a particular focus on the garden.
Open Monument Day with watercolors and photographs
The exhibition features watercolors by Inge Vahle (1915–1989), Fritz Vahle (1913–1991), and Jan Peter Thorbecke. The connection between garden and architecture is also explored by photographer Andreas Neuhann. For many years, he documented Darmstadt's parks and their relationship to architecture in black-and-white photographs. A comprehensive selection of these works is on display in the studio building.
This means that the focus is not only on the listed building, but also on the design and significance of the associated garden.
Further opening days during the South Hesse Cultural Summer
Following the Open Monument Day, the studio house will reopen on Saturday, September 26, and Sunday, September 27, as part of the South Hesse Cultural Summer. The exhibition can be visited from 2 pm to 6 pm on both days; a guided tour will be offered at 3 pm each day.
