The Friends of Braunshardt Castle Association honors the long-standing service of Sister Sheetal and Sister Amala
Last week, the last two nuns of the St. Ludwig retirement home were bid farewell at a celebratory event held at Braunshardt Castle. The Friends of Braunshardt Castle association invited Sister Sheetal and Sister Amala to an afternoon of coffee, cake, and sparkling wine, providing a fitting setting for their departure.
For many years, nuns were an integral part of the St. Ludwig retirement home. With great personal commitment, they supported the care and nursing of the residents and had a lasting impact on life in the facility.
Tradition of the nuns in St. Ludwig continued
After the nuns who had previously worked at the retirement home were recalled by their order about 15 years ago, the then director of the home, Thomas Roth, succeeded in recruiting sisters from India to work in Braunshardt. Sister Sheetal and Sister Amala continued this tradition until the very end and were important figures for many of the residents.
Changes around Braunshardt Castle
The departure of the two sisters is related to the changes at Braunshardt Castle. While the Luisen wing has been owned by the city of Weiterstadt since 2006, the U-shaped section of the building containing the castle church belongs to a private owner.
Since the castle church will be deconsecrated in the future and no more church services will take place there, Sister Sheetal and Sister Amala are now taking on new tasks in other locations.
Thanks from Mayor Niklas Gehnich
Weiterstadt's mayor, Niklas Gehnich, also attended the farewell ceremony and thanked the two nuns for their many years of service.
“I thank Sister Sheetal and Sister Amala for their many years of dedicated service in Braunshardt. It is wonderful that the support association has chosen this dignified setting for their farewell,” Gehnich explained.
Through their work, the two nuns have shaped the St. Ludwig retirement home and the lives of many people in Braunshardt for many years. Their departure also marks the end of a long tradition of nuns at the institution.
