The city center will become a meeting place for encounters, culture and leisure until September
From the end of June to September, Georg-Schüler-Platz and Martin-Luther-Straße in Griesheim will be transformed into places for meeting, relaxing, and shared activities. Under the motto "Summer. Griesheim. (Experience) Life.", the city of Griesheim is testing new ways to use public space and invites residents to rediscover their city center.
The event period begins on Friday, June 26, with a kick-off festival at Georg-Schüler-Platz. Following a welcome address by Mayor Geza Krebs-Wetzl at 5 p.m., visitors can enjoy the summer evening with food from M&M Event-Grill and More and drinks from the Lindz wine bar.
Events and places to stay in the city center
Numerous events are planned for Georg-Schüler-Platz during the summer months. These include after-work gatherings, concerts, readings, panel discussions, and other activities. Additional seating and planters will enhance the square's appeal and encourage people to linger.
The city's aim is to establish the city center more strongly as a meeting place and to test new possibilities for using public space.
More space for families on Martin Luther Street
Martin-Luther-Straße will also be redesigned during the project period. The street around the children's playground will be temporarily closed to car traffic, creating additional space for families, children, and pedestrians.
In addition to seating, various play areas will be provided in the streetscape. The measure is intended to offer children more freedom of movement and families additional places to spend time.
Online survey on the future of the city center
An online survey on the development of Griesheim's town center is being conducted alongside the project. Among other things, the survey examines the quality of life, traffic safety, and aspects of climate adaptation.
The survey focuses particularly on Georg-Schüler-Platz and Martin-Luther-Straße. It is being conducted by the Darmstadt Institute for Infrastructure & Environment.
Real-world laboratories are intended to provide insights for urban development
The measures are part of the "Climate Quarter" funding project and are being implemented as so-called real-world laboratories. These are temporary changes in public spaces that are tested under real-world conditions and scientifically monitored.
The design of the real-world laboratories incorporated results from previous public participation processes. In addition to improving the quality of public spaces, the measures are also intended to enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
The testing phase runs until September. The results will then be evaluated. Initial findings on which measures could be implemented permanently are expected later in September.
The city of Griesheim publishes further information about the events and activities on its website and via its social media channels.
