After Milan Smit initially missed a chance to make it 2-0, Marius Wörl scored a deserved equalizer from distance in the 59th minute.
The match remained hard-fought and seemed destined for a draw before Darmstadt got another chance. In the 86th minute, Smit stepped up to take a penalty and converted to make it 2-1, sparking jubilant celebrations. Darmstadt held onto their narrow lead until the final minutes and celebrated a hard-earned home victory.
The atmosphere was also remarkable. Just a few days after the traveling fans had sent their team off without applause in Kaiserslautern following a disappointing second half, the spectators at the Böllenfalltor stadium were back behind their team. Even during difficult phases, they loudly cheered on Darmstadt under the floodlights.
The relief after the past few weeks was evident after the final whistle. Coach Florian Kohfeldt, usually quite composed, celebrated the victory with unusual emotion alongside the team and fans. "I'm delighted with the home win, thank you to the fans for this Friday evening," Kohfeldt said after the match.
