Chawwerusch Theater presents Kleist classic in Darmstadt
The Chawwerusch Theater presents Heinrich von Kleist's comedy "The Broken Jug" at the Bessunger Knabenschule in Darmstadt on Friday, June 5, 2026. The performance begins at 8 p.m., doors open at 7 p.m.
Director Walter Menzlaw's production is a streamlined and contemporary adaptation of the theatrical classic. The focus is on the central questions of power, responsibility, and the abuse of authority.
The story tells of village judge Adam, who one morning is confronted with injuries, a missing wig, and a delicate court case. Widow Marthe demands an explanation as to who broke her valuable jug. At the same time, events surrounding her daughter Eve and her fiancé Ruprecht are spiraling out of control.
With his contradictory behavior, village judge Adam tries to conceal the truth. In doing so, not only the jug but also trust in the village's legal system is shaken.

The production focuses on the societal and human failings behind the comedy, without losing sight of the play's linguistic wit and comic situations. The cast includes Felix S. Felix, Ben Hergl, and Lina Zimmer.
The performance will take place as an open-air event in the courtyard of the Bessunger Knabenschule; in case of bad weather, it will be moved indoors to the hall.
