Three birds inhabit former Egyptian vulture aviary
Wild turkeys can once again be seen at the Vivarium Zoo in Darmstadt. Three of these large, chicken-like birds with brightly colored heads now inhabit the former Egyptian vulture aviary, where they were previously housed.
Origin and habitat of wild turkeys
The rooster comes from Halle Zoo , while the two hens come from a private breeder . Wild turkeys are widespread in North America – their natural habitat ranges from southern Canada through the USA to Mexico . They were domesticated by the Maya as early as 2000 years ago to provide a regular food source.
Special characteristics of wild turkeys
These birds are tireless runners, but spend the night in treesfor protection from predators. Males can weigh up to ten kilograms , while females a maximum of four kilograms . A clutch contains up to twelve eggs, so the Vivarium Zoo in Darmstadt can look forward to potential offspring.
