Lecture series at Haus Raiss looks at city law and Büttelborn
The "City Stories – Then and Now" series in Groß-Gerau continues on Wednesday, September 9, 2026. From 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the Haus Raiss senior center, topics will include King Wenceslaus and Groß-Gerau's town charter. The event is free of charge, and registration is not required.
Lebrecht Viebahn Sr. and Herta Merz regularly report on historical events and developments in Groß-Gerau as part of this event series. This time, the program includes the topic "King Wenceslaus, the bibliophile, and the town charter of Groß-Gerau."
Gerau was granted city status in 1398
On the sidelines of a court assembly in Frankfurt, King Wenceslaus, at the request of Counts Eberhard V and Diether VIII of Katzenelnbogen, elevated the then village of Gerau to the status of a town on January 21, 1398. With this town charter, Gerau also received the right to hold an annual free fair on May 3rd and a weekly market on Wednesdays.

The event was originally scheduled for August 12th, but was postponed to September due to the heat at the time.
