The documentary film "Bauhaus Women" will be shown on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at 7 p.m. at the Literaturhaus Darmstadt by the open network #FrauenBauenDarmstadt. The 45-minute film by Susanne Radelhof explores the women at the Bauhaus and examines the experiences of those female artists who arrived with the promise of equality. The director will be available for a discussion afterward.
The history of the Bauhaus is often told through the lens of its male pioneers. This 2019 documentary, however, focuses on female artists who came to the Bauhaus hoping for a new, equal way of life and work, but who continued to be confronted with traditional gender roles.
Women at the Bauhaus were the focus
"Bauhaus Women" tells the story of the art and design school from the perspective of its female artists. The award-winning documentary thus sheds light on a part of Bauhaus history that has long been overshadowed by its well-known male representatives.
A discussion with director Susanne Radelhof is scheduled after the film screening.
