Municipalities are once again competing for cycling kilometers
The Groß-Gerau district has announced that the nationwide "City Cycling" campaign will once again take place in the district in 2026. From May 3rd to 23rd, residents are encouraged to cover as many everyday journeys as possible by bicycle, thereby demonstrating their commitment to climate protection and sustainable mobility.
Competition for more climate protection and exercise
The aim of the campaign is to accumulate as many emission-free kilometers as possible. Anyone who lives, works, goes to school, or belongs to a club in the Groß-Gerau district can participate. Teams can be formed from school classes, companies, clubs, or local politicians, for example.
The campaign is organized by the Climate Alliance and aims to encourage people to use bicycles more in their daily lives. Every kilometer cycled contributes to reducing CO2 emissions and simultaneously promotes personal health.
Strong figures from the previous year
Last year, around 5,600 people in 253 teams participated in the campaign in the Groß-Gerau district. In total, more than 847,000 kilometers were covered, saving approximately 139 tons of CO2.
Riedstadt was once again recognized as the most bicycle-friendly municipality. The town, also known as the birthplace of Büchner, also boasted the most active local council.
Join in and form teams
Participation is straightforward: Interested individuals can register online, create their own team, or join an existing one. The only requirement is that a team consists of at least two people.
Particularly dedicated participants can, as so-called “City Cycling Stars”, completely forgo using a car and document their experiences during the campaign period.
School cycling and regional initiatives
Schools in the district are also invited to participate in the Hesse-wide "School Cycling" competition. The aim is to raise awareness among children and young people about sustainable mobility at an early age.
In addition, the Asparagus Days in the Gerau region in May invite visitors to themed bike tours through the region, combining exercise with regional enjoyment.
Registration is now open
Registration for the City Cycling campaign is now open. At the end of the campaign period, the most bicycle-friendly municipalities in the Groß-Gerau district will be recognized.
