The campaign starts on May 3rd with tours and activities
The district town of Groß-Gerau will once again participate in the international City Cycling campaign in 2026. For the tenth time, from May 3rd to 23rd, the motto is: cycle, collect kilometers and collectively send a message for climate protection.
Successful results from the previous year
Last year, 296 active participants cycled a total of 48,911 kilometers. This resulted in savings of approximately eight tons of CO₂. The focus for 2026 remains on the goal of making as many everyday journeys as possible by bicycle instead of by car.
The campaign is organized by the Climate Alliance and has been bringing cycling into sharper focus for politicians and the public since 2008. Background: Approximately one-fifth of CO₂ emissions in Germany come from transportation.
Participation and registration
Those interested can register online, join an existing team, or create their own. All kilometers traveled by bicycle or e-bike are recorded – both for everyday use and leisure activities. Using the official app makes documenting routes easier.
Guided tours through the city and region
To accompany the campaign, the city offers several themed bike tours:
- Monday, May 4, 9:30 a.m.: "Opening bike ride" with Mayor Jörg Rüddenklau – starting at the town hall
- Thursday, May 7, 5:30 p.m.: Tour of current projects in the city area – starting at the town hall
- Saturday, May 16, 2 p.m.: Historical bike tour with Jürgen Volkmann – starting at the City Museum
- Thursday, May 21, 6 p.m.: Sporty tour (approx. 30 km) – Start at the Martin Buber School
A roadworthy bicycle is required for participation. A helmet is mandatory for the sporty tour; otherwise, it is recommended.
Strengthening climate protection in everyday life
Mayor Jörg Rüddenklau emphasizes the importance of the campaign for the city: The city cycling initiative should motivate people to leave their cars at home more often and to sustainably strengthen cycling.
