Campaign promotes greening and launches competition in 2026
The district of Groß-Gerau, together with its towns and municipalities, has launched the "Climate Balconies Wanted" campaign. The aim is to create more greenery on balconies, roof terraces and windowsills, thereby contributing to climate adaptation and biodiversity.
More greenery for a better microclimate
The initiative is driven by rising temperatures, increasing drought, and declining biodiversity. Simple measures are intended to transform even small spaces into green oases. In addition to balconies, front gardens – for example, by converting gravel surfaces – are also eligible for participation.
The campaign runs from May to September 2026 and offers practical tips and planting recommendations for sustainable greening.
“Climate Balcony 2026” competition
A county-wide competition will be held to recognize particularly successful greening projects. The awards ceremony is planned for the Climate Adaptation Week, from September 14th to 20th.
Actions in the municipalities
Several cities and municipalities are also offering additional information and participation activities. These include, among other things, the distribution of plant lists and seeds.
In Groß-Gerau, the campaign kicks off on May 2nd with an information booth at Sandböhlplatz. Representatives from the city, the district, and local initiatives will be on hand to provide information about suitable plants and showcase examples of greened balcony planters. Visitors will receive free seed mixes and informational materials.
