After more than 40 years, a piece of local history comes to an end – a new EDEKA supermarket is being built on the site
With a farewell celebration on October 4, 2026, residents of Georgenhausen bid farewell to the old community center. For more than four decades, the building had been an important meeting place for the people of Georgenhausen and Zeilhard. It was a place for celebrations, club activities, and fostering community spirit. Now, demolition is imminent. A new EDEKA supermarket is planned for the site, ensuring the local supply of groceries.
At the farewell party, numerous visitors took the opportunity to share memories and look back together on the history of the community center.
Community center built more than 40 years ago through self-help
The history of the old community center is closely linked to the voluntary commitment of the local population. More than 40 years ago, citizens built the building themselves through considerable personal effort.
With their work, they created a place that shaped social life in Georgenhausen and Zeilhard for decades.
Whether for club events, festivals, or social evenings – the community center offered space for encounters and shared experiences. Friendships were forged here, events were organized, and countless memories were created.
For many people from the two Reinheim districts, the building was therefore much more than just an event venue. It became an integral part of their personal life stories and local community life.
Mayor Feick praises voluntary commitment
Reinheim's mayor, Manuel Feick, also recalled the special significance of the community center at the farewell ceremony.
“This house embodies an incredible amount of commitment and community spirit. Many people have pitched in, celebrated, and accomplished things together here over decades,” Feick explained.
He expressed his gratitude to all those who had once built the community center and filled it with life over the many years.
“Even though we are now saying goodbye to the building, the memories and the many stories associated with it will remain,” the mayor emphasized.
Historical society commemorates the past
The historical society made a special contribution to the farewell event. With an exhibition, they documented the history of the community center and commemorated the people who had dedicated themselves to the building and the society's activities for decades.
The exhibition offered visitors the opportunity to engage with the history of the house and to revive their own memories.
The city of Reinheim thanked the historical society for its historical research and its contribution to preserving the history of the community center for posterity.
First hammer blows as a symbolic farewell
The farewell celebration also included an unusual activity: children and adults were allowed to symbolically lend a hand and make the first hammer blows.
This made the impending demolition of the building particularly visible.
According to the city of Reinheim, the actual demolition work is scheduled to begin at the end of October. The dismantling will remove a building that has been an important part of community life in Georgenhausen and Zeilhard for decades.
New EDEKA supermarket aims to secure local supply
After the demolition, the site will be repurposed. A new EDEKA supermarket will be built on the site of the former community center.
The new building is intended to ensure the continued provision of local services. This marks the beginning of a new chapter on the site, while the history of the existing community center comes to an end.
The city did not specify a concrete date for the completion of the new market.
Clubs have found a home in the new community center
For the clubs that have used the old community center for many years, there is already a new perspective.
They have now moved into the new community center and can continue their activities there.
This ensures that club life in Georgenhausen-Zeilhard will continue even after the demolition of the existing building.
The city of Reinheim emphasizes that although a familiar place disappears with the departure of the old community center, the sense of community behind it lives on.
