Christmas pyramids and Nordmann firs are being set up – the first market stalls will follow from November 7th
Preparations are underway in Darmstadt's city center for the 2026 Christmas market. On Thursday, October 29th, the nine-meter-high Christmas pyramid will be erected in the market square. Two days later, the first Christmas trees will follow. A Nordmann fir will also be placed in Ludwigsplatz. Finally, on Saturday, November 7th, the first Christmas market stalls will be set up.
With the Christmas pyramid, decorated fir trees, and the first market stalls, the city center will gradually transform into a festive pre-Christmas scene in the coming weeks. The preparations are being organized by Darmstadt Marketing, the Darmstadt Showmen's Association, and other partners.
A nine-meter-high Christmas pyramid is being erected
The festivities kick off on Thursday, October 29th, with the Christmas pyramid in the market square. The nine-meter-high landmark of the Darmstadt Christmas market is being erected by the Darmstadt Showmen's Association.
Setting it up takes eight workers approximately ten hours. Dismantling it later takes about eight hours.
The Christmas pyramid has been a fixture of the Darmstadt Christmas market since 1996. At that time, the showmen's association, together with the city of Darmstadt, ensured that the pyramid was placed on the market square fountain.
It was built in 1995 by the local history society of Hilmersdorf in the Ore Mountains. The showmen's association finances the pyramid, while the town provides support with the necessary permits.
To mark its 20th anniversary in 2015, the structure underwent extensive modernization. A new substructure made of steel beams improved its stability. The pyramid also received a new coat of paint and modern LED lighting.
Christmas trees come from the Odenwald region
Starting Saturday, October 31st, the Christmas trees will be erected in the city center. The Nordmann fir on Luisenplatz will be the first to go up. The tree on the market square will follow on Wednesday, November 4th.
Both trees traditionally come from the region. This year, they are two Nordmann firs from the Odenwald forest, which can no longer remain at their previous locations.
The Christmas tree for the market square comes from Reichelsheim. It has grown too large there and therefore has to leave its current location.
Trees up to approximately 20 meters tall can be erected in the market square. This work is always carried out before the Christmas market stalls are set up.
The Nordmann fir tree on Luisenplatz comes from Wald-Michelbach
This year's Christmas tree on Luisenplatz comes from Wald-Michelbach.
Its construction is particularly challenging because the tram's overhead lines limit the tree's possible height. Together with the illuminated "Langer Ludwig" (Long Ludwig) monument, the fir tree is intended to create a festive atmosphere at the entrance to the city center and the Darmstadt Christmas market.
The Darmstadt Showmen's Association is once again taking over the decoration with baubles and wooden stars.
The delivery and setup of the trees has been a well-established team effort for many years. The family-run forestry business of Marco and Norbert Emig from Wald-Michelbach/Kocherbach has been supplying Christmas trees for Darmstadt's city center for around 20 years.
The Darmstadt fire department is assisting with the setup.
Ludwigsplatz will also have a Christmas tree
In addition to the two large Christmas trees on the market square and Luisenplatz, Ludwigsplatz will also be decorated for Christmas.
Darmstadt Citymarketing will also erect a Nordmann fir tree there on Saturday evening, October 31st. This tree also comes from Wald-Michelbach.
This means that three central squares in Darmstadt's city center will be equipped with Christmas trees.
Construction of the Christmas market stalls begins on November 7th
After setting up the Christmas pyramid and the Christmas trees, the next step in the preparations follows.
The first Christmas market stalls will be set up on the market square starting Saturday, November 7th.
The Darmstadt Christmas market is gradually taking shape. Construction is taking place alongside the regular weekly market, which continues throughout the Christmas market season.
The weekly market remains open during the Christmas season
The Darmstadt weekly market will continue to take place even during the setup, the Christmas market and the subsequent dismantling work.
The regular market days remain Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. Additionally, the weekly market will be held on December 23rd, 24th, and 30th.
During this time, the market stalls will be moved to other areas.
They are located on the west side of the market square along the arcades up to Kirchstraße, as well as in the upper Rheinstraße at the level of the opposite shops and the former Galeria Kaufhof Karstadt building.
This is intended to ensure that the weekly market remains accessible to customers even during the Christmas market season.
